With OmniPlan's custom column and AppleScript support we may be able to get something working pretty well with version 1. To answer your question, though: we will definitely be adding this for version 2, and also we've had some interest from a couple third parties who do have time tracking tools to do some integration. We decided to draw the line there for now because (a) it is a lot of extra complexity that you must get perfect when you are dealing with real money and (b) we discovered in talking to people that a very large segment of users (internal app teams, consulting with payments based on milestones rather than hours, etc.) don't end up using the cost stuff at all. I was the consulting manager here for several years (until we got out of consulting) so I know that this is a pain in the butt and means that you need a separate time tracking tool if you want to use OmniPlan for IT consulting. (The two really are two aspects of the same feature.) What we don't support in 1.0 is cost actuals and - as you say - time spent as opposed to % complete. Well, we do support doing cost baselines with per task costs and resource per use and per hour costs. I beta tested OP and sent lots of feedback, but as an IT consultant these are simply must haves and are the only reasons why I didn't purchase the software. edu discount rates competitive with MS.Īny idea when OmniPlan will be able to baseline COST in addition to schedule? And when will it allow a user to enter time against tasks in HOURS instead of (or in addition to) % Complete. I'd bite at maybe $50, which is incidentally about what 'Plan would cost if Omni offered. Most students probably spend enough time on campus to feel the same way. What I am saying is that when it comes down to it, 'Plan hasn't exposed any magical functionality other than saving me a trip to the computer lab to run Project to make it worth $90. #OMNIPLAN STUDENT DISCOUNT SOFTWARE#I'm not saying I want to use MS software - I did try 'Plan today and liked it a lot. However, students can purchase one license per year, so it really doesn't make a difference one way or the other as major releases of Office tend to last a whlie. #OMNIPLAN STUDENT DISCOUNT PRO#There's also a special bundle available that includes essentially all of the Microsoft pro apps for $99, the only stipulation being that the license can't be upgraded. Students can pick up Project Pro for $51 through volume licensing at my uni. Three, MS Project Academic list price is $179.99 by itself. ![]() Perhaps the marketing droid Gruber quoted was correct. Something about being unable to undo because too many items were selected. You won't find me paying $90 for it, though. It's a nice app, and it definitely feels like it's right at home in Tiger - very modern. #OMNIPLAN STUDENT DISCOUNT FULL#What happened to the days of full fledged demos? How am I really supposed to know how I get along with 'Plan without carrying a project through it?Īll of that said, I downloaded it and constructed a pretty elaborate (and real, in fact) project in about an hour. #OMNIPLAN STUDENT DISCOUNT TRIAL#The trial period for 'Plan really needs to be better thought out none of this "20 item limit" stuff. I'm pretty sure I can get all of Office including Project for $99.įour, the pricetag is high for brand new new software that is, ostensibly, to be relied upon (Omni Group or not). Three, what I was balking at was the educational "discount." Not very competitive with what what other vendors typically offer through the campus bookstore. Two, that 'Plan is "business software" is totally superficial. One, as an engineer, yes, I do need project management software. If $90 strikes you as an astronomical price to pay for a business tool, you probably don't need that business tool. ![]()
